A window fly screen keeps insects out while air moves in. That is the whole job. What surprises most homeowners is how many different designs do that job, and how badly the wrong one can fit a window it was never meant for.
This guide covers the four main types you will find in Dubai homes: fixed, sliding, magnetic, and hinged. Our workshop builds fixed window fly screens to the exact size of your window, and the same measurement process applies whichever type you end up choosing.
Fixed Window Fly Screens
A fixed screen is an aluminium frame with mesh stretched across it, fitted into or over the window opening and left in place. There is no mechanism to open. Because nothing moves, nothing wears out, and the screen sits flush and sealed on all four sides.
Fixed screens suit windows you open and close with a handle, like casement and awning windows, where you never need to reach through the opening. They also suit windows that open rarely, such as high bathroom vents or stairwell windows. In rental apartments they are popular because the unit is held with clips or wedges and can be removed without damaging the frame.
The trade-off is access. If you need to clean the outside of the glass or reach a window latch, a fixed screen has to come off first. That takes under a minute with clip-mounted frames, but it is still a step.
Sliding Window Mesh Screens
A sliding screen runs in its own track beside the window sash. It moves left or right along with the window, so you can adjust the opening and the screen follows. This is the natural match for sliding windows, which are the most common window type in Dubai villas and apartments.
The frame is usually aluminium, and the mesh slides on small rollers. The advantage is everyday convenience. The disadvantage is the track itself, which collects dust and sand over time and needs an occasional wipe so the rollers keep moving smoothly.
Magnetic Window Screens
Magnetic screens use magnetic strips around the frame to hold a mesh panel against the window opening. Some versions use a full framed panel, others use a flexible mesh sheet that sticks to a magnetic strip fixed to the window frame.
They are quick to fit and quick to remove, which makes them handy for windows you want to open fully for cleaning. The weak point is holding strength. In a gust of wind, or with a cat pushing against it, a magnetic panel can detach. They work best on smaller windows in sheltered rooms.
Hinged (Openable) Screens
A hinged screen is framed like a fixed screen but mounted on small hinges, like a little door. You swing it open to reach the window behind it, then swing it shut. It is the premium option for windows you need to access often, such as kitchen windows above a sink where the handle is hard to reach.
The cost of the hinge hardware is the only real downside. The build quality is the same as a fixed screen, and the seal is just as tight when closed.
Which Type Fits Your Window?
Match the screen to how the window works. Casement, awning, and tilt windows pair with fixed or hinged screens. Sliding windows pair with sliding screens. Small, sheltered windows are fine with magnetic panels. If your window has a broken screen already, bring a photo and the measurements, or book a free measurement visit and we will tell you which type fits before anything is made.
Many homes use more than one type. Bedrooms with sliding windows get sliding screens, the kitchen casement gets a hinged one, and the fixed bathroom vent gets a fixed panel. There is no rule that says every window must match.

FAQ
Can one window fly screen type fit every window?
No. The type must match how the window opens. A fixed screen blocks access to a sliding window sash, and a sliding screen cannot seal the opening of a casement window. Measure the window and check the opening mechanism before choosing.
How long does a window fly screen last?
The aluminium frame lasts for many years. The mesh is what ages, and fiberglass mesh typically needs replacing after several years of Dubai sun and dust. When the mesh wears out, we can replace just the mesh and keep the frame.
Do screens reduce the airflow through the window?
Slightly. Any mesh creates a small amount of resistance. Standard mesh blocks very little air, and most people notice no difference. Finer mosquito mesh reduces airflow a little more, so choose the mesh size that matches the insects you need to stop.
Can I install the screen myself?
Clip-mounted fixed screens can be fitted by the homeowner. Sliding and hinged screens need track or hinge hardware aligned with the window, which is best done at the measurement visit by our fitter. The quote is free at the measurement visit.
Will a screen block my view?
A dark mesh on a bright day is barely visible. You see through it easily because your eyes focus past the fine weave. Light-colored mesh is more visible. We recommend dark charcoal mesh for the clearest view.
