Sliding Window Mesh Screens: Parts, Fitting, and Care

Sliding Window Mesh Screens: Parts, Fitting, and Care

Keep Every Screen Sliding Smooth

A sliding window mesh screen is the moving panel that covers the open half of a sliding window. It is the most used screen type in Dubai homes because sliding windows are the most common window type. It is also the type that needs the most attention, because moving parts wear.

This guide covers the parts, how the screen is fitted, the faults we see most often, and how to keep it sliding well. Our workshop makes fixed window fly screens and sliding screens to order in Dubai, fitted at a free measurement visit.

The Parts of a Sliding Screen

The frame is aluminium, mitred and corner-keyed, carrying the mesh. At the bottom sit two or more rollers, usually nylon or steel wheels in a small housing. Along the edges run brush strips, the fuzzy seals that close the gaps between the screen and the track. A pull handle or finger recess lets you slide the panel.

The window provides the track. The screen does not need its own separate structure. It lifts into the top channel and drops onto the bottom track, where the rollers carry it. Adjustment screws on the rollers set the panel height so it sits square in the track.

Fitting a New Sliding Screen

Fitting starts with the track channel profile. There are several common profiles in Dubai buildings, and the screen frame depth must match. We measure the channel width, the opening height, and the travel distance the screen needs to cover.

The panel is made slightly shorter than the opening height so it can lift into the top channel during fitting, then dropped down to rest on the rollers. The roller adjustment screws are then set so the panel runs square. Brush strips are checked along the full travel so there is no gap at any position.

Common Faults and Fixes

The screen drags. The cause is usually sand in the track or worn rollers. Clean the track first, and if it still drags, replace the rollers. The screen jumps out of the track. The panel is set too low, or the rollers have collapsed. Adjust the roller height, or replace the rollers if they are worn flat. Insects get in around the edges. The brush strips are flattened or missing. Replace the strips. The screen rattles. The panel is loose in the track from wear, and new rollers plus strips tighten it up.

Most faults are fixed with a service visit. Full replacement is only needed when the frame itself is damaged.

Keeping the Screen Sliding Smoothly

Vacuum the track channel every couple of months. Wipe the mesh with a damp cloth when it looks grey with dust. Check the brush strips once a year by running a finger along them. If they are flat and hard, they need replacing. Never oil the rollers or the track. Oil plus Dubai dust makes a grinding paste that destroys the rollers.

If the screen gets hard to move after cleaning, the frame may have gone out of square from being forced. Do not force it. Call for a service and we will square it up.

Sliding Screens vs Other Types

Sliding screens are for sliding windows. On any other window type, a fixed or hinged screen fits better. The advantage of the sliding screen is that it follows the sash, so you always have a screened opening whichever half of the window is open. The disadvantage is the maintenance the track demands.

FAQ

Can I fit a sliding screen myself?

If the screen is made to the right size, fitting is a matter of lifting it into the track and adjusting the rollers. We fit every screen we make, so you do not have to. The quote is free at the measurement visit.

My screen is missing. Can you make one to match?

Yes. We measure the track channel and make a panel to fit. Bring a photo of the window or book a measurement visit and we will handle it.

Why do rollers wear out so fast in Dubai?

Fine dust and sand get into the bearings. No roller is sealed perfectly against it. Regular track cleaning slows the wear, but rollers are a consumable part and replacing them every few years is normal.

Can a sliding screen be made more secure?

A screen is not a security device. If you want the window open at night, fit proper window locks on the glass sashes. Some customers add a simple latch to hold the screen closed, but it will not stop a determined intruder.

Do you repair other companies screens?

Yes. We service and repair screens made by other companies, including re-meshing, roller replacement, and brush strip replacement. The measurement visit identifies what the screen needs.

Screen the door. Keep the breeze.

Free measurement. Made in our workshop. Fitted across seven emirates.
