Every window that opens should have a screen. Bedrooms need them for night ventilation without mosquitoes. Kitchens need them because cooking smells draw flies. Bathrooms need them on the small vent windows that stay open all day. This guide matches screen types to the window types found in Abu Dhabi homes, from villa casements to apartment sliding sashes. We make fly screens in Abu Dhabi to order in our Dubai workshop, with a free measurement visit anywhere in the emirate.
Fixed screens: the default for most windows
A fixed screen is a mesh panel in a slim aluminium frame that sits permanently in the window opening. It is the right choice for any window where the screen never needs to move: windows that open inward on a hinge, louvred windows, and windows you open only for ventilation. Once fitted, it needs nothing except an occasional wipe.
Fitting is simple. The frame presses into the window reveal or screws to the window frame, depending on the profile. A bedroom window takes minutes. Because there are no moving parts, a fixed screen lasts for years with minimal attention.
Sliding screens: for sliding windows
Sliding windows need a screen that moves with the sash. The sliding screen panel runs in the window track channel, covering whichever half of the window is open. Abu Dhabi apartments use sliding windows heavily, especially in bedrooms and living rooms, so this is the most common screen we fit in apartment buildings.
The track channel profile is the critical measurement. Different window manufacturers use different channel depths, and the screen must match. We measure the channel on the visit and make the panel to fit it. Rollers carry the panel along the bottom track, and brush strips seal the edges against insects.
Hinged screens: for casement windows and easy cleaning
A hinged screen opens like a small door on hinges. It suits casement windows that swing outward, where a fixed screen would block access to the glass. It also suits anyone who wants to reach through the window: to clean the outer glass, to water plants on the sill, or to pass things through.
The screen gets hinges on one side and a small handle or magnetic catch on the other. It closes flat against the window frame when shut. In villas, hinged screens are popular on kitchen windows, because cooks want to pass things out and wipe the glass without removing a screen.
Small windows and vents
Bathroom vent windows, kitchen vents, and the small high windows in stairwells are often forgotten, and they are exactly the windows left open all day. A small fixed screen on each one closes the gap. These are quick to make and quick to fit, and they make a noticeable difference because vents are open when you are not thinking about them.
Majlis windows deserve a mention. The majlis gets used in the evenings when insects are most active, and its windows are often wide. Fixed or hinged screens keep the evening air coming in and the flies out.
Mesh choices for windows
Standard fibreglass mesh is right for most windows. It keeps out flies and mosquitoes, does not rust, and gives a clear view in dark colours. Finer mesh keeps out sandflies and other tiny insects but reduces airflow slightly, so it suits shaded windows where the breeze is weaker anyway. Aluminium mesh is the tough option for windows that take knocks, such as ground-floor villa windows near the garden or windows a cat likes to climb.
One practical point for Abu Dhabi: dark mesh reads as nearly invisible from inside, and it shows dust less than light mesh. On dusty-season windows, dark mesh looks cleaner for longer.
What we need on the measurement visit
Access to each window, inside. We measure the opening, note the window type and profile, and check for anything unusual such as burglar bars, deep reveals, or shutters that the screen must work around. Burglar bars are common on ground-floor villa windows. We fit the screen inside the bars or between the bars and the window, whichever gives a proper seal.
Windows with existing broken screens are useful. We can see what type was there before and either match it or improve on it.
If a screen is already damaged, read our guide to fly screen repair in Abu Dhabi.
FAQ
Which screen type suits my windows?
It depends on the window. Fixed for windows where the screen never moves, sliding for sliding sashes, hinged where you need to reach through. We recommend the type per window on the measurement visit.
Can you fit screens on windows with burglar bars?
Yes. We fit the screen inside the bars or between the bars and the window so the seal is complete.
Will a screen reduce the breeze?
Slightly, because mesh is a fine filter. Standard mesh keeps most of the airflow. Finer mesh reduces it a bit more. On a windy evening you will not notice the difference.
Do you make screens for odd-shaped windows?
Yes. Arched windows, triangular vents, and other unusual shapes are measured on site and the frame is made to match. The quote is free at the measurement visit.
How do I clean a fixed screen I cannot remove?
Wipe it with a damp cloth from inside, or vacuum it with a brush attachment. For a deeper clean we can remove, wash, and refit it during a service visit.
