Fixing Window Screens: Repair or Replace?

Fixing Window Screens: Repair or Replace?

Repair It or Replace It? Decide Here

A damaged window screen leaves you with two choices every time: repair what is there, or replace the screen with a new build. Both are valid. The right answer depends on the condition of the frame, the type of screen, and how the damage happened. This guide gives you the same checklist we use during fly screen repair in Dubai visits when fixing window screens, so you can look at your own screens and know which way the decision will go.

The short version: if the frame is straight and solid, repair it. If the frame is bent, corroded or the wrong size for the opening, replace it. Everything below explains how to tell.

When Repair Is Enough

Repair covers most of what goes wrong with window screens. Torn or sagging mesh is fixed with a re-mesh: old mesh out, new fiberglass mesh in, tensioned and locked with a fresh spline cord. The frame stays, the hardware stays, and the screen looks new. Broken corner joints, missing spline and loose handles are also repairable. If the screen still sits square in its opening and the aluminium is sound, there is no reason to build a new one.

When Replacement Is the Smarter Call

Some frames are not worth saving. A frame that has been bent and straightened more than once will keep going out of square. Corrosion, common on screens near the coast, eats the aluminium from the inside and no repair holds for long. Screens that were badly measured and never fit the opening properly are another case: repairing them keeps the bad fit. In all of these situations a new workshop-built screen, measured to your exact opening, is the better spend.

Fixed, Sliding and Hinged Window Screens

The type of window screen changes the repair slightly. Fixed screens are the simplest: a frame with mesh, held by clips or screws. Repairs are quick and almost always worth doing. Sliding window screens add rollers and a track, so we check those at the same time. Hinged screens, often used on casement windows, add hinges and latches to the inspection. The decision rule stays the same for all three: a sound frame means repair, a failed frame means replace.

The Two-Minute Check You Can Do Yourself

Push gently on each corner of the frame. If it flexes and springs back, the frame is fine. If it stays bent or you hear cracking, the corners are gone. Run a finger along the mesh: if it is brittle and splits easily, it needs re-meshing. Slide the screen if it moves: grinding or jumping means the rollers or track need attention. Note what you find and mention it when you book the free measurement visit. The quote is free at the measurement visit, so there is nothing to lose by having us confirm.

For a closer look at what re-meshing involves, see our guide on how to replace screen door mesh. The process is the same for window screens.

What the Free Visit Covers

The measurement visit is where the repair-or-replace decision gets confirmed. We look at every window screen you are unsure about, test the frames for square, check the mesh for brittleness, and try the moving parts. You get a straight answer for each screen: repair, re-mesh or new build. There is no fee for the visit and no obligation to go ahead. Most homeowners are surprised how many screens only need a re-mesh once a professional looks at them. Bring up any screen that sticks, rattles or lets insects in, even if it looks fine at a glance. Small problems are cheaper to fix before the frame suffers.

FAQ

Is it cheaper to repair a window screen or replace it?

Repair is usually the lower-cost option when the frame is sound, because you keep the frame and hardware and only pay for mesh and labour. A new build makes sense when the frame is damaged. The quote is free at the measurement visit, so you will see both options before deciding.

Can you repair a window screen I bought elsewhere?

Yes. We repair and re-mesh aluminium window screens from any maker, as long as the frame is worth keeping.

My window screen mesh is sagging but not torn. Does it need replacing?

Sagging mesh has lost its tension and will not seal properly. A re-mesh restores the tension. The mesh itself does not have to be torn to need replacement.

How do I know if the frame is too damaged to repair?

Look for corners that will not stay square, cracks at the joints, and white powdery corrosion on the aluminium. If the frame rocks in its opening or will not sit flat, it is usually time for a new build.

Do you do the repair at my home or at the workshop?

Most repairs happen at our Dubai workshop, where we have the right benches and tools. We collect the screens, do the work, and refit them in one visit. Your home is not left open while the work happens.
