Fly Screen Measurement: How We Measure Your Windows

Fly Screen Measurement: How We Measure Your Windows

Measure twice, cut once

A fly screen is only as good as its measurements. The workshop can cut the straightest frame in Dubai, but if the numbers from your window are wrong, the screen will not fit. That is why measuring gets the care it does, and why the visit is free.

Good fly screen measurement is a small craft of its own. Here is exactly what happens when our technician measures your windows, and why each step matters for the finished screen. For the full story of what happens after measuring, see how fly screens are made.

Every opening is measured, not just every room

The technician measures each window and door opening individually, even when two windows look identical. In UAE villas and apartments, openings that look the same are often a few millimetres apart: different installers, different batches of frames, slight settling of the building. A screen made from one window’s numbers will not necessarily fit the window next to it.

Each opening gets its own label, usually the room name plus a number: “master bedroom 1”, “master bedroom 2”. That label follows the screen from the measurement sheet to the cutting station to the fitting visit, so every screen ends up on the window it was made for.

Width and height are taken at several points

Window frames are rarely perfectly square. The technician measures the width at the top, middle, and bottom of the opening, and the height at the left, centre, and right. The smallest reading in each direction decides the screen size.

Using the smallest reading is deliberate. A screen sized to the largest reading will jam in the narrowest part of the opening. A screen sized to the smallest reading fits everywhere, with a small clearance deduction so it slides in and out without sticking.

The window type decides the screen type

Measuring is also an inspection. The technician notes whether each window slides, hinges open, or is fixed shut, because each type needs a different screen design. Sliding windows get sliding screens that move in the window’s own track. Hinged windows get hinged or fixed screens depending on how the window opens. Fixed glass panels get fixed screens that sit in the frame.

The technician also checks the depth of the frame and the space around it. A screen needs somewhere to sit, and some window designs leave more room than others. If a window needs a special approach, that is decided at the measuring stage, not discovered on fitting day.

Photos back up the numbers

Every measured window is photographed. The photos show the workshop team things numbers cannot: the shape of the frame profile, the handle position, the track layout on sliding windows, any damage or warping. When the technician at the cutting station has a question about a measurement, the photo usually answers it.

What the technician asks you

Measuring is quick, but the technician will ask a few questions while working. Which windows do you want screened: all of them, or just the bedrooms? Do you prefer a particular frame colour? Are there windows where you need the screen to open easily for cleaning access?

Your answers shape the job. A kitchen window above the sink might get a hinged screen you can open to reach the glass. A bedroom sliding door gets a sliding screen. The measurement visit is the right time to think through how you actually use each window.

How long the visit takes

A typical apartment takes 15 to 20 minutes. A villa with screens on every window takes 30 to 45 minutes. The technician works room by room, and you do not need to prepare anything in advance. Clearing access to the windows helps, but it is not required.

After measuring: the workshop takes over

The measurement sheets go back to the workshop, where a supervisor checks every sheet before cutting begins. Any missing detail is clarified with the technician who took the measurements, while the visit is still fresh. Only then does the first aluminium profile go under the saw. The cutting stage is described in our article on how aluminium fly screen frames are cut and joined.

FAQ

Is the measurement visit really free?

Yes. The technician measures your windows, you receive a quote, and there is no charge for the visit itself. The quote is free at the measurement visit, and there is no obligation.

Do I need to be home for the measurement?

Someone needs to let the technician in and answer the questions about which windows to screen. Beyond that, you can carry on with your day while the measuring happens.

Can I measure my own windows and send the numbers?

We prefer to measure ourselves. Small errors in self-measurement are the most common cause of badly fitting screens, and our free visit removes that risk entirely.

How accurate do the measurements need to be?

To the millimetre. The clearance deduction that lets the screen slide without jamming is only a few millimetres, so there is no room for rough estimates.

Which areas do you cover for measurement visits?

Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Abu Dhabi, and Ras Al Khaimah. Call +971 52 443 2655 or WhatsApp wa.me/971524432655 to book.
