RAK evenings are made for open windows. The temperature drops, the breeze comes off the sea or down from the mountains, and the house cools without air conditioning. The catch is that mosquitoes and moths arrive with the breeze, and one open bedroom window is enough to ruin a night’s sleep.
Window screens solve this cleanly. They let the air in and keep the insects out, and once fitted they need almost no attention. We make fly screens in Ras Al Khaimah to order in our Dubai workshop. This guide matches screen types to the window types found across the emirate.
Matching the Screen to the Window Type
Sliding windows get sliding screens. The screen panel runs in the window’s own track beside the glass sash, following whichever half is open. This is the most common window type in RAK villas and apartments, so it is also the most common screen we fit.
Casement windows, the kind that swing open on side hinges, get hinged screens. The screen sits in its own frame on hinges and opens like a small door. Push-out and awning windows, hinged at the top, use the same approach with the screen mounted inside.
Fixed screens suit windows that open but are never climbed through. Upper-floor bedroom windows and bathroom windows are the usual candidates. The screen is a simple framed panel that sits in the opening. Nothing moves, so nothing wears out.
The rule is simple. The screen must move the way the window moves, or not move at all. A screen that fights the window’s motion will be taken off within a month and left leaning against a wall.
Bedrooms and the Evening Problem
Bedrooms are the priority in almost every home we screen. People open bedroom windows in the evening for cool air, and that is exactly when mosquitoes are most active. One unscreened bedroom window means choosing between the breeze and sleep.
Screen every bedroom window you open, not just the master bedroom. Children’s rooms and guest rooms get opened too, and guests will not mention the mosquitoes until morning, when it is too late to do anything about it.
If your main worry is mosquitoes rather than insects in general, it helps to understand where they come from and which openings they use. Standing water near the home, garden irrigation, and the evening hours are the three things to think about.
Kitchen and Bathroom Windows
Kitchen windows need screens that come off easily for cleaning. Cooking grease plus dust builds up on mesh faster than in any other room, and a screen you cannot remove will not get cleaned. Hinged screens that swing open, or fixed screens that lift out, both work well here.
Bathroom windows are smaller and usually opened for ventilation after showers. A simple fixed screen does the job. Make sure it is fitted well enough that it does not fall out when you open the window behind it, which is the most common complaint with bathroom screens.
Mesh Choices
Standard fibreglass mesh suits most RAK windows. It is the default for a reason: it keeps out mosquitoes, midges, and flies, lets air through, and is straightforward to replace when it eventually wears.
Aluminium mesh is tougher. It resists tearing and stands up better to pets that scratch at screens. If a cat sits in the window and kneads the mesh every evening, aluminium lasts noticeably longer.
Finer mesh keeps out smaller insects like sandflies but cuts airflow slightly. We discuss the trade-off at the measurement visit, because the right answer depends on which room the window is in and how much breeze you want through it.
Screens for Unusual Windows
Not every RAK window is a standard rectangle. Villas sometimes have arched windows, corner windows, or high ventilation windows that are hard to reach. These need custom frames, which is exactly what a made-to-order workshop is for.
High windows that are rarely opened still benefit from fixed screens, because the one time you open them in summer is the time the insects come in. Hard-to-reach windows should get screens that never need removing, so cleaning is a matter of wiping the mesh in place.
Mesh wears out eventually, and when it does you rarely need a whole new screen. Our guide to fly screen repair in Ras Al Khaimah explains what can be fixed, what needs replacing, and how a repair visit works.
FAQ
Can you screen windows that open outward?
Yes. Outward-opening casement and awning windows get hinged screens mounted on the inside, so the window still opens fully and the screen stays reachable for cleaning.
Will screens darken my rooms?
Barely. Standard mesh is nearly transparent from a few metres away. You notice it when you look for it, not in daily life. Finer mesh is slightly more visible but still lets most of the light through.
Do I need screens on upper-floor windows?
Yes. Mosquitoes fly higher than people think, and upper floors catch more breeze, which means those windows get opened more. Screen them like the ground floor.
Can screens be removed for cleaning?
Fixed screens lift out of their frames for washing. Sliding screens lift out of their tracks. Hinged screens swing open. We show you how each type comes out on fitting day.
How do I book a measurement visit?
Call +971 52 443 2655 or message us on WhatsApp. We travel to Ras Al Khaimah, measure every window you want screened, and give you a written quote on the spot. The quote is free at the measurement visit.
