The sliding door is the opening Dubai residents use most. Balcony doors in the Marina and JLT towers, patio doors in Arabian Ranches villas, the glass walls of Downtown apartments: they all slide, and they all need screening if you want them open without insects walking in. This guide covers the options for fly screens in Dubai homes where the door slides.
How Sliding Door Screens Work
A sliding door screen is a framed mesh panel that runs in its own track alongside the glass door. You slide it open to walk through and slide it shut to screen the opening. On a standard two-panel door, the screen covers whichever half is open, and it glides with one hand when the track is clean and the rollers are sound.
The screen frame is aluminium, light enough to slide easily and rigid enough to stay square in the track. Brush strips along the edges seal the gaps between the screen and the frame so insects cannot slip around the panel.
Sliding Panels vs Pleated Screens
For a standard sliding door up to about two metres wide, a sliding panel is the right answer. It is simple, reliable, and cheap to maintain: the only wearing parts are the rollers and the brush strips.
Wider openings need a different approach. Villa patio doors and stacked glass walls are often three to six metres wide. A sliding panel that wide would be heavy and hard to move. A pleated screen folds back like a concertina and stacks into a slim profile at one side. It handles wide spans easily and keeps the view clear when open.
Pleated screens also suit openings where you want the whole width open sometimes and screened at others. A sliding panel can only ever cover half the opening. A pleated screen covers the full width when closed and disappears to the side when open.
Tower Balconies: Marina, JLT, Downtown
Apartment balcony doors are almost always sliding doors, and they are tall: floor-to-ceiling glass is standard in newer towers. The screen panel has to match that height while staying rigid. We build tall panels with a mid-rail for stiffness so they do not flex in the track.
Wind is a factor on high floors. A screen panel that rattles in the track is a panel with worn rollers or missing brush strips. New screens fitted properly sit firm. If your balcony catches strong gusts, mention it at the measurement visit so the panel is built with the right tension.
Check with your building management before fitting anything on a balcony. Most towers allow screens without issue, but some have rules about facade appearance or drilling into frames. A free measurement visit will confirm what your building allows.
Villa Patios: Arabian Ranches and Beyond
Villa patio doors are a different job. The openings are wider, the doors heavier, and the screen gets far more daily use. Families with children and dogs slide the patio screen dozens of times a day in the cooler months.
For these doors, pet-resistant mesh is worth specifying from the start. Standard mesh survives normal use, but a dog’s claws or a cat climbing will tear it. The thicker weave of pet-resistant mesh takes the abuse. It costs more than standard mesh, and in a high-traffic patio door it earns that difference quickly.
Wide villa openings, especially corner sliders and stacked panels, are where pleated screens earn their place. They handle the span, they look neat stacked to the side, and they let the whole opening breathe when the weather is good.
French Doors and Hinged Doors
Not every door slides. French doors and single hinged patio doors need hinged screens: a framed panel on hinges that opens like a door. They are fitted to the frame with a magnetic or latch catch to hold them shut. If your patio has hinged doors rather than sliders, say so when booking, because the measurement and the build are different.
Keeping Door Screens Running
Vacuum the bottom track every couple of months. Sand collects there and grinds the rollers. Wipe the mesh with a damp cloth when it looks grey. Check the brush strips once a year by running a finger along them; flat, hard strips need replacing.
If a sliding panel starts dragging, clean the track first. If it still drags, the rollers are worn and want replacing. Do not force a dragging panel. Forcing bends the frame, and a bent frame never runs true again.
Windows Need Screens Too
Doors get the attention, but most insect entries happen through windows, especially bedroom windows opened at night. Our guide to window fly screens in Dubai covers the types for villa windows and tower windows.
FAQ
Can a sliding screen be locked?
Screens are not security devices. Most sliding panels have a simple latch or handle lock that stops the panel drifting, but it will not stop an intruder. Lock the glass door itself for security.
My door is six metres wide. Is that screenable?
Yes. Pleated screens are made for wide spans up to six metres. A site measurement confirms the exact build for your opening.
Will the screen block my view?
Dark mesh is barely visible from inside. Charcoal or black mesh gives the clearest view; light-coloured mesh reflects more light and looks hazier. Choose dark mesh for balcony doors where the view matters.
Can you screen a door that already has a broken screen?
Yes. We repair and replace existing screens, including re-meshing damaged panels and replacing rollers and brush strips. If the frame is bent beyond repair, we make a new panel to fit the same track.
Do I need screens on every balcony door?
Screen the doors you actually open. A balcony door that stays shut all year does not need one. Start with the doors you use for evening air and add the rest if you find yourself opening them.
