Window Screen Mesh: Fiberglass vs Aluminium Compared

Window Screen Mesh: Fiberglass vs Aluminium Compared

Strong Aluminium. Clear Fiberglass.

The mesh inside the frame does the actual work of stopping insects. Two materials cover almost every residential screen: fiberglass and aluminium. They look similar at a glance, but they behave differently in Dubai heat, dust, and daily use.

This guide compares them directly so you can choose with confidence. Whatever you pick, our workshop fits fixed window fly screens with your chosen mesh, made to the exact size of each window in our Dubai workshop.

Fiberglass Mesh

Fiberglass mesh is the standard choice for most homes. It is made from woven glass-fiber strands coated in vinyl. It is light, flexible, and does not rust or corrode, which matters in coastal areas of Dubai and Abu Dhabi where salty air eats at bare metal.

Because it is flexible, fiberglass bounces back from bumps. A child’s ball or a clumsy elbow dents it instead of creasing it permanently. It is also the mesh with the best outward visibility. A dark fiberglass weave practically disappears on a bright day, so the window still feels open.

The weakness is puncture. A cat’s claws will tear fiberglass. Sharp tools will too. In Dubai sun, fiberglass mesh gradually becomes brittle after several years and eventually needs replacing. When it does, we re-mesh the existing frame, which keeps a good frame in service.

Aluminium Mesh

Aluminium mesh is woven from thin aluminium wire. It is much stronger than fiberglass and resists tearing, claws, and weather. Ground-floor windows, homes with cats, and windows that face a busy street all benefit from the extra strength.

Aluminium mesh does not sag in heat the way fiberglass can, so it stays drum-tight for years. It also survives dust storms and hard cleaning without damage. The trade-off is visibility. The metal weave catches light, so the screen is more noticeable, and the view through it is slightly less clear than through fiberglass.

Aluminium mesh can dent if hit hard, and a creased dent does not spring back. It can also corrode in salty air over time, so we use coated mesh for coastal properties. It is heavier, which matters little for window screens but is worth knowing.

For large windows the stiffness of aluminium mesh is an advantage. It spans wide openings without sagging in the middle, which is why wide fixed panels often use aluminium even when fiberglass would be fine for a smaller window.

Head-to-Head Summary

Strength goes to aluminium. Visibility goes to fiberglass. Lifespan in mild conditions is comparable, but in harsh Dubai sun and coastal air, aluminium holds up longer while fiberglass needs replacing sooner. Repairability favors fiberglass, because re-meshing is quick and the material is forgiving. Cost favors fiberglass as well, since the material is cheaper and easier to work with.

Which Rooms Suit Which Mesh

Upper-floor bedrooms and living rooms get fiberglass. The view stays clear, nothing pushes against the mesh, and the lifespan is fine. Ground-floor windows, windows near where cats sit, and street-facing windows get aluminium for the strength. Sliding screen doors and large panels usually get fiberglass because the lighter weight keeps the rollers moving smoothly.

Many homes mix both. There is no reason every window needs the same mesh, and the measurement visit recommends per window.

The Weave Matters Too

Both materials come in standard and fine weaves. Standard weave stops flies and mosquitoes. Fine weave stops sand gnats and no-see-ums but cuts airflow a little more. Choose the weave based on the insects you actually see, not on theory. If you are unsure, ask during the free measurement visit.

FAQ

Can aluminium mesh be used in every screen type?

Yes, with one note. It works in fixed, sliding, hinged, and pleated screens. Its extra weight is only a consideration for very large sliding panels, where we may recommend fiberglass for smoother rolling.

Does fiberglass mesh fade in the sun?

Dark fiberglass mesh can lighten slightly over years of direct sun. It is a cosmetic change and does not weaken the weave. Screens facing south or west age faster than north-facing ones.

Is aluminium mesh safe around children?

Yes. The wire ends are sealed inside the frame channel, so there are no sharp edges exposed. Aluminium mesh is actually the safer choice where children lean on windows, because it will not tear and let a child push through.

How do I tell which mesh I currently have?

Press it gently with a finger. Fiberglass flexes and springs back. Aluminium feels stiffer and may hold a small dent. Aluminium also has a faint metallic sheen in sunlight that fiberglass lacks.

Can I mix mesh types in one house?

Absolutely. Bedrooms with fiberglass for the clear view, ground floor with aluminium for strength. The measurement visit plans each window individually. The quote is free at the measurement visit.
