Smooth Screens For Sliding Windows

uPVC sliding windows are common in Dubai bedrooms and apartments. They slide smoothly, seal well, and suit air-conditioned rooms. Adding a mosquito mesh screen to them is a standard job, but the screen has to work with the sliding mechanism, not against it.

This guide explains how screens fit uPVC sliding windows, what wears out over time, and what to check. We build fixed window fly screens and sliding screens for uPVC windows in our Dubai workshop, fitted at a free measurement visit.

How the Screen Track Works

A uPVC sliding window has two or more sashes running in parallel tracks. The mosquito screen gets its own track, usually the outermost channel. The screen panel slides left and right independently of the glass sashes, so you can position the screen over whichever part of the opening is open.

The screen frame is lighter than the glass sash because it carries mesh instead of glass. It runs on small rollers at the bottom and a guide at the top. When everything is clean and aligned, it glides with one finger.

What Wears Out

Three parts wear out on sliding screens. Rollers first. Dust and sand get into the roller bearings, and the screen starts to drag or jump. Rollers are cheap to replace and we carry replacements for the common types. Brush strips second. These are the fuzzy strips that seal the edges of the screen in the track. They flatten with age and stop sealing, which lets insects in around the edges. Track channels third. Sand builds up in the channel and lifts the screen slightly, opening a gap at the bottom.

All three are maintenance issues, not replacement issues. A screen that drags or gaps usually needs a service, not a new screen.

Cleaning the Track Properly

Vacuum the track channel with a crevice tool first to lift the sand and dust. Then wipe the channel with a damp cloth. Do not oil the rollers. Oil attracts dust and makes the problem worse within weeks. If the screen still drags after cleaning, the rollers are worn and need replacing. Forcing a dragging screen bends the frame out of square, which turns a small roller job into a bigger repair.

Brush strips can be revived with a stiff brush that lifts the flattened fibers, but flattened strips are near the end of their life. We replace brush strips as part of a screen service.

uPVC vs Aluminium Windows for Screens

uPVC frames are thicker than aluminium frames, which means the track channels are deeper. This is actually an advantage for screens, because the deeper channel holds the screen more securely and leaves less room for gaps. The screen frame itself is still aluminium, since aluminium is lighter and stiffer for a sliding panel.

uPVC expands and contracts slightly with temperature. A well-made screen allows for this movement without binding. Stock screens sized too tight can jam on hot afternoons when the uPVC has expanded. Made-to-measure screens are sized with the right clearance.

When to Replace Instead of Repair

Replace the screen when the mesh is torn beyond patching, when the frame is bent or cracked, or when the rollers have worn grooves into the track channel. If the frame is straight and the track is sound, repair is the better option. Re-meshing and new rollers cost far less than a new screen.

FAQ

Can a screen be added to an existing uPVC sliding window?

Yes, in almost every case. The window already has the track channels, and the screen panel is made to fit them. The measurement visit confirms the channel profile and takes the measurements. The quote is free at the measurement visit.

Why does my sliding screen keep jumping the track?

Usually worn rollers or a track full of sand. Clean the track first. If the jumping continues, the rollers need replacing. In rare cases the frame is bent from being forced, and then the frame needs straightening or replacing.

Do sliding screens rattle in the wind?

A well-fitted screen should not rattle. Rattling means the panel is too loose in the track, usually from worn rollers or flattened brush strips. A service fixes it.

Can the screen be locked?

Sliding screens are not security devices. They keep insects out, not people. If security is a concern, fit proper window locks on the glass sashes and use the screen only for insect protection.

How long does a sliding screen last?

The frame lasts for many years. Rollers and brush strips are wear parts that need replacing every few years depending on dust exposure. The mesh lasts as long as the sun and use allow, and can be replaced on its own when it wears out.
