Sharjah sits between the coast and the desert, and homes here get both sets of problems. Mosquitoes come off the creek, the lagoons, and the landscaped community lakes at dusk. Fine inland dust blows through any gap all year round. A fly screen in Sharjah has to keep the insects out and stay clean enough to breathe through in a dusty climate.
This guide covers the full picture: the screen types that suit Sharjah homes, how a proper fitting works, what repairs are worth doing, and what to ask before you hire anyone. We make fly screens in Sharjah to order in our Dubai workshop, and we travel to Sharjah for free measurement visits.
What a Fly Screen Actually Does
A fly screen is a mesh panel fitted over any opening you want to leave open: a window, a balcony door, a patio door. The mesh blocks mosquitoes, flies, and other flying insects while letting air and light through. In Sharjah the real test is dust. Mesh with a standard weave collects dust until the airflow drops, so the mesh choice and the cleaning routine matter as much as the fitting.
The frame is aluminium, cut to the exact size of your opening, with the mesh held in a rubber spline. A screen that is measured and fitted properly has no gaps at the edges, which is where insects actually get in. Most of the screens we replace in Sharjah were the right type in the wrong size. Bad measurement is the usual culprit.
The Screen Types Worth Knowing
Fixed screens are the simplest. They clip or screw into the window reveal and stay put. They suit bedroom and kitchen windows that you open regularly but never need to step through. They are the cheapest to make and the easiest to keep clean.
Sliding screens ride in the track of a sliding window or door. They suit the sliding aluminium windows and balcony doors that fill Sharjah’s apartment towers. The rollers and brush strips are the moving parts, and both wear, so expect maintenance every few years.
Hinged screens work like a second door, opening on hinges with a magnetic or latch catch. They suit casement windows and the single swing doors found in older Sharjah villas. They are the easiest to clean because you can open the whole panel flat.
Pleated screens fold like a concertina and stack to one side. They suit wide openings like villa patio doors, where a sliding panel would be heavy or where you want the doorway fully clear most of the day. The mechanism is more complex, so they cost more than a standard sliding screen to make.
How a Proper Fitting Works
It starts with a measurement visit. We come to your home in Sharjah, measure every opening you want screened, and check the frame condition, the track channels on sliding units, and how the windows open. The quote is free at the measurement visit.
The screens are then made to order in our Dubai workshop. This matters because Sharjah buildings use several different window profiles, and a screen that does not match the profile leaves gaps. Made to measure is the normal way of doing it. Stock sizes almost never fit properly.
Fitting is usually quick. A full set of window screens goes in within a visit, and sliding door screens take a little longer because the track has to be checked and the rollers adjusted. We test every screen before we leave. It must close fully, seal at the edges, and slide or swing smoothly.
What Goes Wrong With Old Screens
Mesh tears, usually at the corners or where a pet has pushed through. Sun and heat make old fiberglass mesh brittle, and then one knock tears it. Rollers collapse on sliding screens and the panel starts to drag. Brush strips flatten and insects come in around the edges. Frames bend when someone forces a stuck panel.
Most of this is repairable. Re-meshing a frame, replacing rollers and strips, and re-seating a panel are standard service jobs. Replacement is only needed when the frame itself is damaged beyond straightening.
Sharjah Areas We Visit
We travel across Sharjah from Dubai: Al Nahda and Al Majaz for the apartment towers, Al Khan and the waterfront communities, Al Zahia and Muwaileh for the villas, and the newer developments like Aljada and Sharjah Sustainable City. The measurement visit is free wherever you are in the emirate.
How to Choose Who Does the Work
Ask whether the screens are made to measure or pulled from stock. Ask whether the fitter checks the track channels and replaces worn rollers, or just drops a panel in. Ask what happens if a screen does not fit on the day. A proper service answers all three without hesitation.
Be cautious with door-to-door offers and anyone who wants payment before measuring. A legitimate fitter measures first and quotes after.
The most common single screen type we fit is the sliding door panel, covered in detail in our guide to sliding door fly screens in Sharjah.
FAQ
How long does it take to get screens fitted?
After the measurement visit the screens are made to order in our workshop, then fitted on an agreed date. Most homes are completed within a couple of weeks of the first visit. Fitting is scheduled once the screens are made; we do not rush made-to-measure work because a hurried screen is a screen that gaps.
Do you fit screens in rented apartments?
Yes. Most screens fit without drilling or with minimal fixings, and landlords in Sharjah generally allow them. If you are in a managed tower, check with building management first. We have fitted screens in managed buildings across Al Majaz and Al Nahda.
What mesh do you use?
Fiberglass mesh for most homes, which keeps insects out while letting air through. For homes with pets or high-traffic doors we recommend a stronger pet-resistant mesh. The measurement visit is the right time to discuss which suits your home.
Do you repair screens you did not make?
Yes. We repair screens made by other companies: re-meshing, roller and brush strip replacement, and re-seating panels. If the frame is too damaged to save, we quote a replacement instead.
Is the measurement visit really free?
Yes, in Sharjah as in the rest of our service area, which covers Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Abu Dhabi, and Ras Al Khaimah. We measure, you get a quote, and you decide. No obligation.
Can screens be fitted on double-glazed windows?
Yes. The screen fits on the room side of the window, independent of the glazing, so it does not affect the insulation.
